When someone leaves an organisation, most HR departments will run an exit interview or exit survey. The goal is to understand the reasons behind the departure so that these issues can be addressed and other employees will be less likely to follow. However, despite the fact that these approaches are widely used, many HR professionals recognise that their findings aren’t always reliable.
There are many reasons why data from an exit interview can be unreliable. Sometimes the employee doesn’t want to burn bridges, so won’t disclose the real underlying issues. Other times, the feedback can be emotionally charged and inaccurate. There’s also the issue of transparency and accountability – often the results will just be filed away and no one steps in to take action.
